However, searching for e.g. owner „AkzoNobel“ in a standard patent database will only find a tiny fraction of their current patent assets, plus many patents actually not owned by them any more. We thus heavily process the data for 1) corporate structures (the patent might be owned by the subsidiary of a subsidiary of your competitor), 2) old company names (the applicant name given by the patent office doesn‘t exist any more), 3) mergers & acquisitions (the patent is now owned by a new entity due to a corporate merger or acquisition), 4) patent transactions (i.e. individual patents have been sold to a new owner), 5) name misspellings and 6) homonyms (names used by multiple distinct companies, such as e.g. Merck).

Nils is co-founder and managing director of PatentSight. His interest in IP was sparked when conducting academic research on the profit impact of active IP management and on the evaluation of patents for strategic management. This research, his extensive work with patent data as well as his experience as a consultant to large technology companies led to the formation of PatentSight in 2008. He is a frequent speaker and a co-author of scientific papers in the field of IP as well as a co-author of the EPO’s patent teaching kit.
Björn is managing director of PatentSight. Prior to that he worked several years as a Senior Consultant and Project Manager at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and DHL Consulting, advising Top Management across industries in all kind of strategic questions. In 2012 Björn was asked to rebuild and lead the IP team as Director/Head of Corporate Patent Management of Deutsche Post DHL Group. His key achievements include a newly developed and implemented IP strategy linked to business strategy, an optimized patent portfolio, and out-licensing deals by using the Patent Asset Index™. He joined PatentSight in 2015.
Holger is co-founder of PatentSight. He is professor of technology and innovation management at the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management and visiting professor at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, as well as honorary professor at the Melbourne Business School. He has published more than 50 papers in leading journals in the fields of strategy, innovation and intellectual property. Since his PhD dissertation about the use of patent data for the strategic planning of R&D (published in 1996) he has received multiple awards for his research. Holger advises and speaks to corporations worldwide and serves on the board of start-up firms.

The Technology Relevance™ measures the importance of the invention for the technical development. It is estimated based on the number of worldwide prior art citations received from later patents. This metric has been found in numerous scientific studies to be a valid indicator of the importance of the invention.
Citation-based indicators are also used with great success in other domains. The Google search engine uses the citations between web pages to estimate the importance of these pages. Scientists evaluate the impact of their research based on the number of citations they receive.
For the Patent Asset Index, the prior art citations made by patent examiners around the world are considered to compile a true view of the overall worldwide impact of an invention on the technical development. We consider prior art citations at many patent offices such as e.g. the USPTO, the EPO, WIPO, the German Patent Office, the Japanese Patent Office and many others.
The number of patent citations is corrected for age, patent office citation practices and technology field.
Technology Relevance™ is a relative measure comparing the patent to other patents from the same field. A value of "2" means the patent is twice relevant for subsequent developments as an average patent in the same technology field.
Market Coverage™ measures what share of the global market is protected by the patent. An invention has a higher business value if the patent rights cover more international markets.
Market Coverage™ is measured as the size of the markets in which valid patents and pending patent applications exist. The gross national income of a country is used as a proxy of the relative size of the national market. Market Coverage™ is stated relative to the world's largest national market - the USA. A Market Coverage™ of "2" thus means that the protected markets are, in total, twice as large as the US-market alone.
Technologies are often covered by thousands of patents. But only a few really matter for business. Empirical studies found that the top 10% patents generate more than 80% of the business value of all patents (Ceccagnoli et al., 2005). This is why comparing patent portfolios only based on the number of patents filed would be highly misleading.
The Competitive Impact™, the key indicator used in the Patent Asset Index method, estimates how much business value a patent has. It is based on the combined effect of the Technology Relevance™ and the Market Coverage™ of a patent. It is derived algorithmically based on a global database of patents and related legal and business information. Thus, it can be calculated even for very large portfolios and for any patent regardless of its owner and its country of origin, using exactly the same objective methdology for each and every patent.
Competitive Impact™ is a relative measure comparing the business value of a patent with an average patent from the same field. A Competitive Impact™ of "2" means the patent's impact is twice as large as an average patent from the field. The measure Competitive Impact™ has been validated in a scientific study comparing more than 64 000 patents that either had a high or low impact on the competition.
